Mushroom Research

Five mushrooms, one page each. What it is, where it came from, and what researchers have measured.

Fruiting Body instant mushroom coffee pouch

Fruiting Body publishes one research page for each mushroom people ask us about. Two of them, lion's mane and chaga, are in our coffee. Three more, cordyceps, reishi and turkey tail, are here as reference only. Each page covers the biology, the history, and what researchers have measured so far.

How do you read this section?

This page routes. The detail sits on the five pages below, one mushroom each, and nowhere else on the site.

We publish them because the category is full of summaries and short of working. If you would rather check us than trust us, every study is named where it is used, and you can go and read it yourself.

The five mushrooms

The two in our coffee

  • Lion's mane · No cap, no stem. It grows like a white waterfall out of a wound in an old tree.
  • Chaga · Charcoal-black outside, rust-orange the whole way in, and there is still no chaga farm.

The three we do not use, written up because you ask

  • Cordyceps · The fungus that grows out of insects. The Tibetan name for it means summer grass, winter worm.
  • Reishi · A woody bracket so glossy it looks varnished. Lingzhi in China, reishi in Japan.
  • Turkey tail · Banded fans in overlapping shelves on dead wood. Probably the mushroom you have walked past most.

The first two are what goes in the bag. The other three have never been in a Fruiting Body product and are not for sale here. They get a page because the question keeps arriving and we would rather answer it than let somebody else.

What makes a mushroom worth putting in a bag?

Three things, in this order. It has to taste like something we want in coffee, because you are drinking it every morning. It has to be the mushroom rather than the grain the mushroom was grown on, and a laboratory can tell those apart to a decimal place. And the human research on it has to be real and published, whether it has settled or is still running.

Two clear that bar today. If a third ever does, this is the page where it shows up first.
